Freelance rates

Freelance rates #

I’d love to do work for you! Contact me at binary.star.games@gmail.com or binarystargames on discord if you’d rather keep it informal to start. Some general notes:

  • I typically request at least half payment up front.
  • All prices here are negotiable (to some extent) based on personal circumstances and in USD - let me know what your budget is and I’m happy to talk.
  • These rates are for small teams only - if your company has a typical yearly revenue of $100,000 or higher, please send a proposal via email.
  • Depending on my schedule I may not be available immediately - if so, I’ll let you know and provide a timeframe when I’ll be available.

Layout #

I’m happy to do layout work for you! For examples of my work, I’ve been responsible for layout for everything listed as not-third-party on my itch page and I’m partially responsible for layout for Celestial Bodies.

  • I use the Affinity suite exclusively and cannot practically use Adobe products.
  • I typically use free or cheap fonts that have clear licenses (google fonts is a great repository of free ones with clear licenses but there are a handful of others floating around that I know about) and prefer not to use something that doesn’t have a license listed. If it’s a paid font that I don’t have a license to, I’ll request that you reimburse me for it. If it’s something I’ve used in the past that I have a license to use but isn’t free, I’m happy to use it for your project, but you’ll have to buy your own license if you want to make changes on your end.

Full Layout #

You’ll have to provide the full manuscript via google docs or word document or some similar thing. If you have any particular thoughts about format, please let me know upfront or make notes in the manuscript.

If you want me to lay out a supplement for anything I’ve made (APOCALYPSE FRAME, Valiant Horizon, Celestial Bodies as examples) then rates will go way down assuming you want me to match/approximate the original game’s style.

  • $25 for initial consulting
  • $10 per laid-out page (assuming 5.5" x 8.5" or A5 pages).
  • Simple graphical design is included. You’ll have to provide all illustration, however.
    • Significant, non-repeating graphical design (for example, Celestial Bodies grids) can be provided but will be extra.

Deliverables:

  • At the end of the engagement, I’ll typically provide you both the affinity publisher file as well as any exported PDFs (in both “pages” and “spreads” formats). I will do my best to add sensible PDF bookmarks to the exports I provide you as well as set up the document to generate them on export.
  • I’ll make a “vertical slice” that shows off 5-10% of your project to make sure that you’re happy with the direction before proceeding with the rest.
  • Includes three passes of revisions on the final deliverable, with all requests made within a month. Further revisions will be $2/page, $50 minimum.

I always try to include a table of contents and PDF bookmarks unless requested otherwise. Happy to help you with exporting PDFs for print or digital distribution.

Setting Masters #

For $75 I’ll send you an Affinity Publisher file with the following:

  • Flexible page masters for a few use cases, typically at the very least:
    • Chapter start
    • General use
  • Several paragraph styles:
    • Body
    • Three levels of headers
    • Two levels of bullets or numbered lists
    • Sidebar/margin-note header and body
  • A table of contents
  • Some tips and tricks to utilizing it well!

You’ll have to insert the content yourself, but this will provide a quicker start.

Itch page #

For $50 I’ll set you up with a nice looking itch page that matches the vibe of the game. Some that I’m particularly proud of:

Some notes:

  • You’ll have to temporarily add me to the itch project for me to do so - I’ll provide instructions if you’re not sure how to do that. (You can remove me from it once the page is done, but I can’t work on it any other way.)
  • I would recommend that you request CSS access from itch beforehand if you don’t have it - happy to provide wording for the email you need to send them to get them to enable it.
  • Typically I try to match fonts to the game’s style, but itch’s page theme tools are limited to fonts listed on google fonts, so that may be tough in some cases. I’ll do my best to find something close that looks good!

Writing #

Hire me for your stretch goals, to make classes or enemies or scenarios for your game, itch page blurbs, or whatever, really! You can see my itch page for ideas of what I’d be good at.

  • Typical rate is $0.20/word or a similar flat price based on a generalized word count range.
  • I may ask for an extra sum up-front if I have to read 100 pages or more to understand enough to write something for it.

Consulting #

In general if you have a quick question about something hit me up! If it’s a quick answer or something more general (like printing, setting up itchfunds, setting up itch physical sales, etc) I’m happy to chat for free.

I’d be delighted to take a more critical look at your game’s design and provide any thoughts, suggestions, etc. (I’ll aim to provide a page or two of thoughts.) My specialty is tactical combat and I can provide the best feedback for that, but I’ll read most things if asked. You’ll have to provide a digital or physical document with the content you want me to provide feedback on (which is to say, I’m not buying your game as part of this if I don’t already own it).

  • $10 up to 2000 words.
  • $25 up to 5000 words.
  • $50 up to 10000 words.
  • $100 up to 20000 words.
  • +$100 if it’s over 20000 words and for every 20000 words past that (so for instance, $300 for 45000 words).

Feel free to clip part of your manuscript if you want me to focus on one particular thing - I’ll adjust my prices based on what I’m provided by volume. If you’re worried about any aspect in particular and want me to focus on that, please let me know up front so I can keep that in mind during my read. (If this isn’t provided I’ll just provide general feedback on the whole thing.)

If what you provide has at least some basic layout (especially something like bookmarks for a longer document) then you’ll get your feedback faster.
